Amy Norton relaunches BetterWall: Art Museum Street Banners for the Home

Access Gallery hosts a relaunch party and fundraiser on October 26, 2017

Initially launched in 2004, by Nick and Nora Weiser, BetterWall collects the street banners that were used to promote major exhibitions from top museums around the country and gives them a valuable “after-life” as limited-edition wall hangings available to purchase for the home or office. Earlier this year the business was acquired by Amy Norton of The Creative Angle. She is proud to partner with Damon McLeese and Access Gallery for a relaunch party and pop-up exhibit of banners on October 26 from 5-8pm at 909 Santa Fe Drive in Denver. The event is open to the public and will also be a fundraiser as a portion of sales from the exhibit will be donated to Access Gallery, an inclusive nonprofit organization that opens doors to creative and educational opportunities for people with disabilities to access and experience the arts. The banners will remain on view at Access through First Friday November 3 and during the Art Walk from 6-9pm.

Norton befriended the Weiser’s in 2006 during their first banner exhibit, at the gallery where she worked on Santa Fe Drive. She later began working with the Weiser’s fulfilling orders for them as a side-hustle, while she grew her marketing and communications business. Nick Weiser explains the decision to part with the business, “As I became more involved in other start-up opportunities I was able to focus less on maintaining BetterWall and did not want to see it go defunct. Amy was a natural fit to take over as she knows the ins and out of this very niche business having worked so closely with us for years.”

As banners come down from the street poles they go to BetterWall who secures appropriate retail rights for any copyrighted material. Next, they research and write a backstory of the exhibition and artist for use on the website. Each banner and write-up serves as a fun mini-art history lesson for customers who visit the website www.betterwall.com where they are available to purchase. All banners are in excellent condition with no rips, tears, fading or major blemishes. The banners are carefully cleaned and stored in keeping with appropriate archival protocol. Each banner is carefully and beautifully packaged and includes a certificate of authenticity. Best of all, these vinyl banners find new homes rather than clogging up a landfill and a portion of sales proceeds going back to the museums to support their collections and operations.

Recent banners made available to purchase include those from the Wyeth exhibition at the Denver Art Museum that include a close up of Wyeth’s dog Kleberg, with some of these banners even signed by the artist. A portrait of Monet in his Garden in Giverny, France is featured on banners from the St. Louis Museum of Art and make for a stunning pair when two banners displayed together showing each side to complete the image. These are just two examples of the wide selection ranging from Rembrandt to Pop Art, and Asian to Psychedelic poster art of the 1960s.

As oversized art goes, the banners are an affordable way to make a real impact in large and small spaces. “We have customers who collect them and like to switch them out in their home or business. Others who are thrilled to have an original piece to fill that awkward space up high in a stairwell or as a focal point and statement piece in any room.” says Norton.

The Derby Art District (DAD) is created

The Derby Art district is an exciting new collaboration of studios and galleries being developed on the edge of Denver within the historic Derby neighborhood in Commerce City, Colorado. Currently, two venues comprise the district, but additional venues are planned. Jeanie King and Mark Sink, both long time Denver arts advocates, have collaborated to launch the district -- the Magnolia Street Art Space and Gallery Sink Studios. The goal is to offer affordable art studios, gallery spaces and other amenities to support the arts. Venues will provide long-term space for artists and creative businesses. The district directly addresses the need for artist spaces related to escalating real estate prices and other issues that have impacted and displaced many in Denver's creative community. The initial buildings will offer studios that range in size from 300 to 1,500 square feet and will cost approximately $1 per square foot.

Stay tuned for more information about the district which will host special public events and more. The Derby Art District is located just north of Denver city limits. Venues are situated approximately 7 miles north of the River North (RiNo) Art District. Interstate highways 76, 270 and 25 are very close and convenient, and, a new light rail station will open closeby in 2018, which will link the district to downtown Denver and other city segments.

Magnolia Street Art Space Seeking Artists

The Magnolia Street Art Space will provide 8 art spaces ranging in size from approximately 300 to 1,500 sf. The building is anticipated to be ready for occupancy in late November/early December, 2017. Rent will be $1 psf, plus a prorated share of common areas, heating and cooling. WiFi will be provided. Square footage calculations on the following floor plan are estimates.

Please join us at 11am on Tuesday October 17, 2017 for an Open House at the new Magnolia Street Art Space! The space is currently undergoing fast track renovation and the Open House will provide a great opportunity to preview the space.

If you cannot make the Open House and are interested in reserving a space within the Magnolia Street Art Space, applications will be accepted via email. Please specify the space you are interested in. In order to achieve a high artistic standard, building occupants will be curated by the Mag Art Space team. Artist spaces will be reserved for artists who demonstrate excellence in their profession. Artists must have an up-to-date website and provide an artist statement and references with their application. Artists must also agree to participate in studio/gallery events, which will take place two to three times a month.

Great Art for a Good Cause: Local arts nonprofit The Letterpress Depot launches fundraising campaign to make the Englewood train depot new

On April 27 local arts nonprofit, The Letterpress Depot, will launch their first major fundraiser to reimagine the Englewood train depot and transform it into a regional hub where students, artists, designers, printers and neighbors can come for inspiration, hands-on experience and, most importantly, discover the fun of letterpress printing. The fundraiser will kick off with a celebration at 6:00 pm on April 27th, 2017 at the Globe Hall with an incredible assortment of prints and art produced by local and international artists including Frank Kwiatkowski, Shepard Fairey and well-known letterpress printers including Tom Parson, Jason Wedekind, Brad Vetter and the Hamilton Wood Type Museum. All proceeds will go towards critical repairs and renovations to the Letterpress Depot’s future home. Denver-based band Chimney Choir will also perform.

Denver Theatre District's Blue Trees Begins April 18

On Tuesday, April 18, 2017, Konstantin Dimopoulos' The Blue Trees, an environmental art installation about global deforestation and the importance of trees to people and their environment, will launch in The Denver Theatre District, coloring the trees lining the streets of downtown Denver, using a biologically-safe, water-based, non-permanent colorant.

The work is the first in a series of installations, collectively called Terra Firma, to be hosted by The Denver Theatre District in 2017. The Blue Trees takes a familiar urban landscape and transforms it into something surreal, unfamiliar, even uncomfortable, inviting the public to notice the presence of trees and question what occurs when our environment changes.

The aim of The Blue Trees is to generate thinking and conversation about environmental and social issues, raising social consciousness through art.

Family-friendly and free programming, scheduled throughout the month of May and hosted by The Denver Theatre District, will include musical performances, performances by local arts & culture organizations, educational lectures and wellness events.

  • About Konstantin Dimopoulos
Konstantin Dimopoulos creates both permanent and temporary public art installations, from sculptures to land art. Born to Greek parents in Egypt, he and his family migrated to New Zealand when he was a young boy in the 1960s at a time when there was no support for new immigrants. This experience as a merely tolerated stranger in a new land has resonated throughout his life when he studied first as a sociologist then as an artist. A deep connection with humanity, social justice and environmental consciousness pervades his artwork. The Blue Trees highlights the issue of global deforestation; while The Purple Rain removes the anonymity from the generic term “homeless.” His kinetic linear sculptures are in public art collections around the United States. Tansey Contemporary Opens New Location at 1743 Wazee Street, Denver CO

Tansey Contemporary, founded in Santa Fe, NM, announces its new flagship space in LoDo at 1743 Wazee Street, now open to the public

Tansey Contemporary is focused at the intersection between contemporary art, design and fine craft including glass, ceramics, fiber, mixed media, sculpture and painting. The artist roster features well established artists making museum quality works who are exhibiting nationally and internationally.

The gallery is expanding its presence from Santa Fe, New Mexico, recognized as the third largest art market in the US, after gaining a national following. Its current space on the famed Canyon Road will remain open, but Denver will become the headquarters from which the Tanseys hope to continue to expand the business’ international reach.

“Denver is an attractive place to run an international business. Its growing population, thriving economy, continually improving infrastructure, international accessibility and diverse, skilled workforce make it ideal for our purposes. We think it is significant that Denver’s voters and leaders understand the positive contribution the arts make to the city’s economic development, as demonstrated by the recent extension of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). We hope to make a positive contribution by basing our business here and continuing to participate in the local arts community,” explain the gallery’s owners, Michael and Jennifer Tansey.

Michael Tansey is heavily involved in the national arts community as majority owner and Chairman of Art Miami, LLC, which runs a growing portfolio of prestigious international art fairs primarily staged in Florida and New York. The company’s flagship fair is Art Miami, the well-established leading satellite to Art Basel during Miami’s art week in December. The portfolio also includes Context Miami, Aqua, Art Wynwood, Art New York, Context New York, Art Southampton and the recently launched Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary.

Jennifer Tansey is from the Denver area. Her early career was based in this community, working in organizational communications, partner relations and marketing in both the non-profit and business sectors. She left her most recent role as Membership Manager at Colorado Public Radio to run the gallery full time and is a member of the 2017 Colorado Business Committee for the Art’s Leadership Arts class.

The couple acquired the Santa Fe Gallery in 2013 as its previous owner, Jane Sauer, looked to retire. It was originally founded in 2001 by philanthropist Mary Annhalzer, who was very committed to addressing women’s issues. The Tanseys preserve this aspect of the gallery’s history by maintaining at least 50% female artists in the gallery program (currently above 60%).

Denver Theatre District Announces Terra Firma: A Series of Art Installations

The Denver Theatre District, with the expertise of Denver-based arts curator and partner NINE dot ARTS, will activate a 16-block area of downtown Denver during 2017 with Terra Firma, a series of unique urban art installations. Terra Firma will feature the work of local, national and international artists with the following installations throughout the year.

Konstantin Dimopoulos’ “The Blue Trees,” an environmental art installation about global deforestation and the importance of trees to people and their urban environment. Scheduled for April and May with details about the exhibition coming in early March.

Temporary Arts Incubator, an opportunity for local artists to exhibit their work and activate the city center with unique art experiences. Scheduled to launch in June.
An internationally recognized artist whose installation will invite the audience to share in artistic creativity on the streets of downtown. Scheduled for August and September, at which time the artist will be disclosed to the public.

“After nearly a decade of providing interactive cultural experiences and events to the public, including Supernova, Murmuration, Sesh Fest and Oh Heck Yeah!, The Denver Theatre District is excited to continue our support of artists by infusing the community with these engaging and unusual installations,” said David Ehrlich, executive director, The Denver Theatre District. “Each installation will include free programming that energizes the streets, activates the public, and collaborates with local organizations, schools and partners.”

Mike Wright Gallery to Merge with Abend/1261

Mike Wright Gallery is excited to announce a new chapter in in Denver's dynamic art scene. We have merged with the renowned 1261 and Abend galleries headed up by one of Colorado's premier gallerists Christine Serr and her partners Quang Ho, Doug Kacena and David Uhl. Christine brings a wealth of knowledge to collectors with over 25 years as a gallery owner. Beginning April 1st the new gallery group will begin renovations to create an amazing and innovative new concept where all three galleries (1261, Abend and MIke Wright Gallery under a new name) will exist in a progressive space designed to enhance the collector's experience.

Many of our existing artists will continue to exhibit with the new galleries, joining the incredible roster of artists represented by the gallery group, including masters like Daniel Sprick, Vincent Zeus and Jeremy Mann.

After a year of restoration and enhancement, Denver Arts & Venues is reopening the McNichols Civic Center Building to the public with a special event Thursday, Sept. 15, 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to partake in a grand reopening celebration with food, drink, entertainment and opportunities to win prizes such as roundtrip airfare, tickets to Red Rocks concerts, Broadway shows, and more. Tickets are on sale now at AXS.com.

The grand reopening celebration is the public’s opportunity to see the newest iteration of this historic building. Improvement highlights include a new front courtyard offering better connectivity to Civic Center Park and universal access to the building. The open courtyard supports outdoor program activation, as well as showcasing the building’s second floor exterior balcony. A new freight elevator grants easier access for public and private events and will enable diverse Denver Arts & Venues programming. Second and third floor restrooms have been renovated and relocated creating more usable space and higher capacity events.

The grand reopening celebration also highlights the newest exhibitions at the McNichols Building. “Art of Sport: Iconic Photographs of American Legends from 1956-today” features the work of the famous Rich Clarkson and the Clarkson Creative Group, and includes iconic shots of NCAA tournaments, the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies. “I’ve got a bike!: Artists respond to the Bicycle” celebrates Colorado’s bike community through the eyes of local artists with SPOKES presenting cutting-edge videos and sculptures on the cycling theme.

Opening as a Carnegie Library in 1910, and located at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Bannock Street, the McNichols Building originally served as Denver’s first public library and as the center of learning in Civic Center Park. The Greek Revival-style building was designed by Albert Ross and funded through a generous $200,000 donation from industrialist and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. The building served as a library until 1955 and then as the home of the Denver Water Board. The building was renamed the McNichols Civic Center Building in 1999 in honor of the McNichols family contributions to Denver.

In 2010 the inaugural Biennial of the Americas transformed the building into a focal point of culture, art and ideas, representing people of the western hemisphere for the month of July. Denver Arts & Venues re-opened the building in 2012 as a contemporary arts and culture hub for the people of Denver. The McNichols Building, with its classic Corinthian columns and iconic colonnade, offers new arts and culture experiences in a classic space. The building, along with Civic Center Park, was named a National Historic Landmark in 2012. With the new renovations, the distinguished building enters its new chapter, not only as a historic cornerstone in Denver, but as a place to experience art, culture and events.

Museum Of Contemporary Art Denver Announces Free Memberships For Colorado Artists

MCA Denver is pleased to announce the I’m an Artist membership, a new program providing free museum membership for working artists residing in Colorado. This new membership level is the first in a series of initiatives and programs aiming to enrich Denver’s future by ensuring that artists and creatives are integral to its growth and success.

“MCA Denver is committed to being custodians of Denver’s creative future, by ensuring that Denver’s prosperity integrates the crucial creative elements that lend character and diversity to the city, promote innovative thinking, and attract even more creative talent,” said Adam Lerner, Director and Chief Animator at MCA Denver. "Free admission for artists is the first step we are taking towards the goal of adding color and texture to Denver's current and future success.”

MCA Denver is excited to be the first museum in Colorado to secure funding (for three years) to underwrite 1000 memberships, to be used exclusively by working artists. Beginning on November 19, Colorado-based artists can register for memberships through MCA Denver’s website (mcadenver.org/imanartist.php).

“Colorado artists have always been a crucial part of our program, and this initiative takes our support one step further. It puts a little more wind in the sails of the many creative individuals who add vitality to the life of the city, regardless of their career stature.” said Lerner.

To celebrate the new I’m an Artist membership, MCA Denver will be hosting a launch party on November 19, 2015 from 7-9PM. The party will coincide with the reopening of the Open Shelf Library, featuring work from twenty-three artists. The party will feature live screen printing of the artist membership cards, a vintage pinball tournament hosted by Marc Hughes, tunes from DJ Mike Giant, and drink specials in the MCA Cafe + Bar. Admissions to the event is one cent and open to the public.

This program is one of a series of initiatives and new programs that the museum will roll out over the next three years, in an effort to enrich Denver’s future by ensuring that artists and creatives are integral to its growth and success.
