I have yet to make the trek to Colorado Springs to see the recently renovated Fine Arts Center, but I'm going to find time this Saturday to get down there and catch The Eclectic Eye: Pop and Illusion, Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation before it closes on October 28th. I'm certainly more excited about this show than the recently opened Louvre exhibit at the DAM. From the FAC website:
In the 1950s, Weisman and his wife began collecting modern and contemporary American and European art for their home. Today, the Weisman collection is considered one of the most important collections in the United States and includes works by iconic artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, Keith Haring, Robert Motherwell, Duane Hanson, and Henry Moore among others. But it was in his capacity as a philanthropist that Weisman made his greatest and most enduring contribution. In the 1980s, he established the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation which supports the arts through grants, educational programs, and exhibitions.
The Colorado Spring Fine Arts Center is extremely excited to host The Eclectic Eye: Pop and Illusion, a major exhibition of works from the Weisman Foundation. The works selected for the exhibition draw from Weisman’s great passion for Pop art and illusionistic art from the 1960s, ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s.
I wish it were just a bit closer as I'm not big on the 1.5 hour drive down there, however I've been really impressed with what I've seen every time I do make the trip (Andy Warhol and Peter Max in 2005 before they closed for construction). I do end up making a day of it and will wander around downtown and take in their satellite gallery FAC Modern which is showing Faces in the Crowd: Portraiture from the Permanent Collection of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Faces will be around until January 20th 2008.
Typically these special shows are "no photos allowed" affairs so I'll see if I work permission to get some pix for the website. If nothing else, you can look forward to some exterior pix of the new building.
