Beginning with an artist-led public walking tour on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at 5:30 PM at 3rd and Main Street in Carbondale, the Carbondale Public Arts Commission (CPAC) presents its 11th anniversary 2013-14 Art aRound Town sculpture exhibition. Featuring works by fourteen artists from seven states, Art aRound Town is a rotating, year-long public art exhibition showcasing sculptures throughout the town of Carbondale.

In addition to the twelve selections traditionally included in the annual exhibition, 2013’s Art aRound Town presentation represents the inaugural year of CPAC’s partnership with the Carbondale Public Library, which allows for the inclusion of two additional entries to raise the number of sculptures for subsequent forthcoming years of the exhibition to a total of fourteen.

For 2013, 65 artists from nineteen states and Bangkok, Thailand, submitted sculpture-based works for consideration. For the third consecutive year, the “call” was placed on the Call for Entry (Café) web site for public art. The sculptures within the exhibition include both representational and abstract works chosen by a jury made up of CPAC board members and town officials.

2013 Art aRound Town exhibition participating artists are: Steven Durow (New Orleans, LA), Barry Ferich (Las Vegas, NV), David Friedheim and Trisha Kyner (Baltimore, MD), Susan Kane (Las Cruces, NM), Phillip Maior (Loveland, CO), John Merigian (Sanger, TX), Frank Morbillo (Tesuque, NM), Posey Nelson (Crestone, CO), John Northcutt (Las Cruces, NM), Mike Rand (Carbondale, CO), C.J. Rench (Hood River, OR), Vaughn Shafer (El Jebel, CO), Christopher Thomson (Ribera, NM).

Of the 2013 selections, CPAC Co-Chair Brad Sherman comments: “Once again the annual Art aRound Town exhibition has achieved a high-water mark in terms of both quantity and quality of entries, and CPAC is truly pleased to embark on a partnership with the Carbondale Public Library to bring even more outstanding artwork into our community. On behalf of the commission, we are, as always, very grateful to all the artists that answered the call, as well as to The Town of Carbondale for its continuing support of CPAC and for their commitment to making the arts a vital part of our town.”

CPAC Co-chair Ashley Todey comments: “With each passing year, the Carbondale Public Arts Commission attracts new artists and community partners, strengthening our collective mission of making Carbondale a hub of visual culture within the Roaring Fork Valley. We look forward to another wonderful exhibition in 2013, and to welcoming the exhibiting artists, community members, and arts enthusiasts from both near and far as they have the opportunity to experience these artworks and all that Carbondale has to offer.”

Other CPAC initiatives for the forthcoming exhibition year include a selection of an Art aRound Town “Best in Show” award, which will be announced during the September 28 annual Carbondale celebration of “Potato Day.” The selection comes with a prize component of $1,000.
