I had a chance to spend some time in Carbondale last week and was impressed with the vibrant downtown art scene on Main Street. I stopped into the Carbondale Public Arts Commission gallery and office and got a colorful arts district "Art aRound Town" walking tour map from director Ro Mead, who also invited me back for the next First Friday art walk. The map highlights the many public sculptures that line Main Street by local artists including Shannon Muse, Michael Lindsay, Chaz della Porta and Sherrill Stone. There are several interesting galleries including artist Marty Garfinkel's Roadside Gallery which specializes in hand printed photos on canvas of vintage Americana (among other works) and the studio of artist Majid Kahhak whose updated impressionism runs from delicate mountain landscapes to fluid abstractions of skiers and horses. If you can't handle Independence Pass on your next trip out to Aspen, be sure to take some time out and stretch your legs in Carbondale.
