Join us First Friday, March 6 from 5pm-8pm for the reception. The community effort surrounding Dream City: Vision 2020 is about organizations and individuals coming together to envision our community in the year 2020. Smokebrush wanted to approach the notion of public art as something that provides an essential richness to the fabric of our community and our quality of life. To approach this subject under the context of graffiti is meant to spur dialogue about the two: public art as a whole, and graffiti as a part of that. Graffiti is a genre of art that is controversial in some cases, but it is also a form of art that has allowed many artists a creative forum and subcultural upbringing. Certain rebellious social attitudes can also be linked to the genre of graffiti, but many talented artists have come from this background and nowadays in the big Artworld, yes the one with a capital A, are making major art careers for themselves. The artists, Futura and Saber, are considered legendary artists in the genre of graffiti. Futura, born in 1955, has been a street artist in New York since the early 1970s. Please see Futura’s bio online at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futura_2000. Saber, a bit younger, is an L.A. artist who became a legend after creating the world’s largest piece of graffiti. It’s so large it can be seen in satellite photos! Please see his complete bio at http://saberone.com/biography.
