British
artist Damien Hirst (who had several pieces here in Denver as part of the Radar show at the DAM) recently set an art world record selling his "For the Love of God" for $100 million US, the highest price ever for a work of art by a living artist. The platinum cast skull, encrusted with 8,601 diamonds cost $20 million to make (fabrication, platinum, diamonds) so the "group of
anonymous investors" that purchsed the piece obviously saw some long term upside.
Sara Macdonald, a spokeswoman for the White Cube gallery which handled the sale mentioned "Hirst is
keeping a stake in the skull. It is the intention of the investment
group to resell the sculpture at some stage in the future but I cannot
provide a time scale for this or estimate the value that the work will
be sold for."
