Amy Norton relaunches BetterWall: Art Museum Street Banners for the Home
Access Gallery hosts a relaunch party and fundraiser on October 26, 2017

- Pop-up exhibit features large original paintings by artists from the Access Gallery Artworks program, AJ and Josiah, who used discarded banners as a canvas
Initially launched in 2004, by Nick and Nora Weiser, BetterWall collects the street banners that were used to promote major exhibitions from top museums around the country and gives them a valuable “after-life” as limited-edition wall hangings available to purchase for the home or office. Earlier this year the business was acquired by Amy Norton of The Creative Angle. She is proud to partner with Damon McLeese and Access Gallery for a relaunch party and pop-up exhibit of banners on October 26 from 5-8pm at 909 Santa Fe Drive in Denver. The event is open to the public and will also be a fundraiser as a portion of sales from the exhibit will be donated to Access Gallery, an inclusive nonprofit organization that opens doors to creative and educational opportunities for people with disabilities to access and experience the arts. The banners will remain on view at Access through First Friday November 3 and during the Art Walk from 6-9pm.
Norton befriended the Weiser’s in 2006 during their first banner exhibit, at the gallery where she worked on Santa Fe Drive. She later began working with the Weiser’s fulfilling orders for them as a side-hustle, while she grew her marketing and communications business. Nick Weiser explains the decision to part with the business, “As I became more involved in other start-up opportunities I was able to focus less on maintaining BetterWall and did not want to see it go defunct. Amy was a natural fit to take over as she knows the ins and out of this very niche business having worked so closely with us for years.”
As banners come down from the street poles they go to BetterWall who secures appropriate retail rights for any copyrighted material. Next, they research and write a backstory of the exhibition and artist for use on the website. Each banner and write-up serves as a fun mini-art history lesson for customers who visit the website www.betterwall.com where they are available to purchase. All banners are in excellent condition with no rips, tears, fading or major blemishes. The banners are carefully cleaned and stored in keeping with appropriate archival protocol. Each banner is carefully and beautifully packaged and includes a certificate of authenticity. Best of all, these vinyl banners find new homes rather than clogging up a landfill and a portion of sales proceeds going back to the museums to support their collections and operations.
Recent banners made available to purchase include those from the Wyeth exhibition at the Denver Art Museum that include a close up of Wyeth’s dog Kleberg, with some of these banners even signed by the artist. A portrait of Monet in his Garden in Giverny, France is featured on banners from the St. Louis Museum of Art and make for a stunning pair when two banners displayed together showing each side to complete the image. These are just two examples of the wide selection ranging from Rembrandt to Pop Art, and Asian to Psychedelic poster art of the 1960s.
As oversized art goes, the banners are an affordable way to make a real impact in large and small spaces. “We have customers who collect them and like to switch them out in their home or business. Others who are thrilled to have an original piece to fill that awkward space up high in a stairwell or as a focal point and statement piece in any room.” says Norton.
