Words Works - a group exhibition of North American artists featuring two & three dimensional work that utilize text as both a visual and a conceptual ingredient. Denver area artists included in the exhibit are Gail Watson, Joan MacDonald, Katie Taft, Kirsten Vermulen, Kimberly MacArthur Graham, Lara Schenck, Mia Semingson and Rachel Hawthorn. Also exhibiting are Evan Jenson (Annapolis, MD), Donna Price/Juliane Leitner (Asheville, NC/ Altmuenster, Austria), Heidi Zednik, (Asheville, NC) Melissa Duckworth (Royal Oak, MI), Sue Anne Rische (Lubbock, TX) and Tate Foley (Athens, GA).

About the artworks in the exhibit:
  • Donna Price exhibits a collaborative sculptural piece she created with Austrian artist Juliane Leitner speciically for Words Works.
  • Evan Jensen exhibits intaglio prints incorporating both printed and handwritten text. Gail Watson exhibits words cast in porcelain created during her a recent residency at Platte Forum.
  • Heidi Zednik exhibits stitched and painted paper works created during travel to her native Austria.
  • Joan MacDonald exhibits selections from First Draft, an ongoing series of writings and drawings on paper.
  • Katie Taft exhibits crocheted words.
  • Kimberly MacArthur Graham exhibits selections from Within/Without, a series of paintings done in collaboration with Denver poet Kathryn T. S. Bass.
  • Kirsten Vermulen exhibits mixed-media wall pieces created for this exhibit that include musical notations as text.
  • Lara Schenck exhibits mixed media works on paper and canvas.
  • Melissa Duckworth exhibits selections from her installation Love in Four Pieces.
  • Mia Semingson exhibits a three volume altered book.
  • Rachel Hawthorn exhibits selections from a photo series Family Secrets.
  • Sue Anne Rische exhibits a series of teacups with sandblasted text.
  • Tate Foley exhibits diptychs of screenprints alongside found prints.
About the artists:
  • Donna Price is an Asheville, NC based sculptor and Juliane Leitner is a ceramicist living and working in Altmünster, Austria. Price’s work was included in a three-person exhibit at Abecedarian Gallery last fall. Leitner has not previously exhibited in the US.
  • Evan Jensen is an illustrator, designer and printmaker living and working in Annapolis, MD. This is the irst Denver showing of his work.
  • Gail Watson is a letterpress printer and book artist. She maintains a studio and residence on the Lost Peak Highway near Golden, CO. Her work is frequently included in group shows in the Denver Metro area.
  • Heidi Zednik is an Asheville, NC based visual artist and writer. She is currently represented by Abecedarian Gallery and was the focus of a 3-person exhibit last year.
  • Joan MacDonald is a mixed media artist and long-time member of Edge Gallery in Denver. She lives and works in Pine, CO. Her work was included in Interweavings at Abecedarian Gallery last year.
  • Katie Taft is a Denver artist (currently a member of Sliding Door Gallery) best known for the sculptures she creates and places in a variety of circumstance and then photographs.
  • Kimberly MacArthur Graham is a Denver painter regularly shown at both commercial galleries and art centers across the Western US.
  • Kirsten Vermulen is a Denver area musician and visual artist. Her work was included in Transparent/Opaque at Abecedarian Gallery last spring.
  • Lara Schenck is a printmaking student at University of Colorado, Boulder. Her work has been shown locally at Inklounge and at Core. This is the irst time her work is shown at Abecedarian.
  • Melissa Duckworth is an MFA candidate at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Her installation Love in Four Pieces was exhibited last year in the Denver metro area at both East End Applied Arts and Abecedarian’s Interweavings show. More selections from that series are included in Words Works.
  • Mia Semingson teaches photography and book arts at University of Colorado, Boulder.. She shows regularly at Abecedarian Gallery, including the Sculptural Book show last year and most recently in Molten II, Erotic Bookworks.
  • Rachel Hawthorn is a Denver mixed media artist and is currently a member of Sliding Door Gallery. This will be her irst time exhibiting at Abecedarian.
  • Sue Ann Rische of Lubbock, Texas teaches at Texas Tech University. Her studio work is primarily in metalsmithing and drawing. Her work was included in Transparent/Opaque at Abecedarian Gallery.
  • Tate Foley is an MFA candidate in printmaking at University of Georgia in Athens. His work is numerous private collections and widely exhibited. This is the irst showing of his work in Denver.
