On First Friday August 4th, Plinth Gallery welcomes Steven Hill and his newest ceramic work in his untitled solo exhibition. This highly acclaimed artist has maintained a ceramic practice for over 30 years. Steven is well regarded as a workshop leader and educator, and his signature work has been featured in publications worldwide.
Steven's functional ceramic work exploits the fluidity of clay and the wheel forming process. His shapes spring to life as if they grow from the wheel. The voluptuous shapes are further enhanced by the depth and quality of his surface decoration. Using a subtle palette of rich satin glazes, he sprays multiple layers over each other so they flow and melt together with a unique depth and vibrancy when fired in the kiln.

Hill’s innovative techniques in an electric kiln produce surfaces that echo those produced using gas reduction techniques. By using a computer-controlled electric kiln, he can manipulate the glazes and generate surface crystals that are formed by a controlled cooling. He has also pioneered the contemporary use of “single firing” in which the first firing or “bisque” firing is eliminated. Also referred to as “green or green-ware glazing,” he skillfully applies liquid glaze to the unfired ware, eliminating that first firing. It is both an economic and aesthetic advantage, saving energy as well as having a very intimate relationship with the glaze and its application.
Plinth Gallery Curator Jonathan Kaplan has known Hill since their shared graduate school days at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. According to Jonathan, Steven has always, "pushed the limits of how pottery can be formed and glazed. He brings a fresh, vibrant, and innovative approach to functional pottery. His work shows his long-time commitment making truly unique and beautiful usable ceramic objects.”. Steven currently maintains his studio practice at 323clay in Independence, MO.
WORKSHOP: On August 5-6, Steven will instruct a 2-day workshop at Plinth Gallery. A limited number of spaces are still available. During this workshop, Steven will throw and assemble his work while explaining his experience with single firing. He will share a huge amount of knowledge and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, engage in dialog, and learn about his process and history while watching him work.
