June 26 - July 12, 2008Shane Coffey in the associate galleryOpening reception: Friday June 26, 6:00-10:00 pm ![]() Terry Campbell at Pirate - photo by Ken Hamel/DenverArts.org Painter Terry Campbell casts himself in dreamlike settings on large canvases with somber colors and angry looks. Confronting Campbell's stark worlds brings out a curious feeling of discomfort as one tries to piece together the works' mysterious narratives; you can almost feel the backstory behind the gas mask, sledgehammer, vacuum cleaner and the other props that his characters mindlessly wield. Contrasting the dark subject matter is a very simple, almost naive approach to composition that offers up his subjects whole, life size, right before your eyes. Fortunately, the characters are so caught up in their own drama that they really don't have time to directly menace, rather they just keep you off balance: you're happy to be outside of the story, just peeking in waiting for something bad to happen... sort of like watching a scary movie. - KLH Pirate Contemporary Art 3659 Navajo St Denver, CO 80211 303.458.6058 Fri: 6:00 - 10:00 pm Sat/Sun: Noon - 5:00 pm http://www.pirateartonline.org
