Would I still find this beautiful if____________?

I have always been a collector, of sorts, and found beauty and usefulness in discarded objects. I am especially inspired by the transformation of simple objects by joining them together to create something more complex. Recently, I have been drawn to the debate of Nature vs. Nurture. If I had been raised in a different environment, would I still be drawn to these simple materials? Would I find a used envelope beautiful if the nurture qualities of my life had been drastically different? All of the mixed media materials that I use are evidence of places I’ve been, jobs I’ve worked, items I’ve purchased, and mail I’ve received. I have used these mixed media elements to document the “nurture” qualities in my life due to my physical location. Whether the composition and artistic decisions were determined more from nature or nurture is still up for debate.

Barb Gal: 71% of the Earth is Water

"In this day of concern about climate change and protecting our fragile environment, it is good to be reminded of the importance of water in our lives. Besides the obvious physical contribution to our well being, the spiritual and psychological benefits to us of a trickling brook, or the roar of the surf, or the calm surface of a lake, or simply splashing in a puddle – these contribute to our mental and spiritual health. In this show are captured moments of beauty which have helped to make me whole." - Barbara Gal
