moaIntersecting Formations is a result of Craig Marshall Smith's artist residency at the MOA studio in the fall of 2017. Smith teamed individually with ten artists to produce artworks for this exhibition. Collaborating artists include: Amy Metier, Daniel House Kelly, Deborah Jang, Greg Watts, Gretchen Goetz, James Robie, Jennifer Meyerrose, John McEnroe, Mark Friday, and Sharon Feder.

Collaborating artists include Smith's contemporaries, friends, former students, and mentors. This exhibit is one of Smith's final projects as he scales back his visual art career to focus on writing.

"This exhibition is quite unique in that each artwork is a direct response or shared experience with Craig Marshall Smith's paintings," said MOA CEO, Cynthia Madden Leitner. "We are delighted to be able to support one of Craig Marshall Smith's final visual art endeavors as he shifts his focus to writing."

In addition to the collaborative works, Smith created diptychs as tribute to late artists Richard Diebenkorn and Jan Stüssy by combining their techniques and his. Smith studied with both artists in his time as a student at UCLA.
