Michele Mosko Fine Art is pleased to introduce the works of New York artist Bill Durgin to the Denver audience with a one-person show entitled Figure Studies.

Durgin’s photographic images reflect his fascination with the human body as a sculptural form. Sometimes humorous, sometimes frightening, and sometimes sexual, the artist manipulates the body to tell a new kind of story. Durgin uses highly flexible dancers as models who bend and twist so that their appendages are hidden, allowing their stance to transform from recognizable beings into a kind of surrealistic still-life object. Every photograph is further enhanced by the abstract placement of the figure in an environment that cannot be readily identified. In some of the photographs, Durgin couples the body parts with organic props that further transform the imagery with a new sensual quality creating a beautiful, cinematic but possibly frightening picture.

Durgin speaks of his work, “Each pose transmogrifies the figure towards abstraction; exaggerating or diminishing the skeletal structure until it approaches an amorphic form. I want the bodies to be recognized as bodies, but also to be detached from common perceptions of the figure. Bound within each singular view, the uncanny figures convey the body as both abject and marvelous.”

These complex arrangements of the body, props and the artist’s minimal approach in presenting them engage the viewer so that we examine our own physical and psychological boundaries as we view the human form.

The exhibition, which is running concurrent to and as a part of Denver’s Month of Photography, will open on Friday, March 4th and run through April 16th, 2011. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception and will hold a gallery talk on Saturday, March 5th to answer questions about his unique style and vision.
