The UCAR Community Art Program at NCAR is proud to present two new exhibits: Oil paintings by Nickie Barbee and Prints on metal by Jim Miller

Nickie Barbee began her creative journey as a teen, encouraged by her artist grandfather. His interest and guidance made all the difference then to a budding artist. She has continued through the years to take classes and workshops. She has been painting professionally since 2015. Nickie has studied with numerous teachers over the years, with her most influential being Michelle Philip at the Classical Art Academy in Boulder, Colorado. She has furthered her study by attending workshops given by David Santillanes, Jane Hunt and Sheri Farabaugh. Others who have influenced her work are authors Richard Schmid, Edgar Payne and John Carlson, along with many others. Nickie’s representational, detailed style is inspired by nature’s enduring beauty and travels to locations throughout the United States and abroad. This travel has provided new perspectives and wide-ranging subject matter for her paintings. She especially tries to convey the feeling, uniqueness and sense of place in her subject matter. She finds oil painting to be an absorbing, compelling medium to communicate with. Nickie has received numerous awards at local and national venues and is a member of Oil Painters of America, along with two local art associations. Her works are held in private collections in CA, CO, IA, MO and NM.

Jim Miller is a passionate astro-photographer, specializing in taking original long exposure images of deep sky objects such as galaxies, nebula, and star clusters. The process includes imaging through telescopes and monochromatic CCD cameras specially designed for astronomy. The majority of photos are taken from his home in the mountains near Boulder, Colorado. The total exposure time varies from 10 hours up to 30 hours depending on the brightness of the subject and filters used.

NCAR's Mesa Laboratory is located at 1850 Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, CO. Its galleries are open to the public on weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and on weekends from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. There is no charge for admission.
