Kevin Snipes: New Ceramic Work
October 4 - 25, 2019
- Opening Reception: First Friday, October 4 from 6-9pm
For our October exhibition, we are pleased to present new work by ceramic artist Kevin Snipes. Kevin is a visiting artist at The Art Students League of Denver and will present a 2 day workshop October 5-6 demonstrating the construction and decoration of his narrative vessels. Snipes first exhibited at Plinth Gallery in November 2009 and we are honored with his return to the gallery.
Kevin Snipes is a visual story teller, using the ceramic vessel as a surface for narrative text and drawing. The artist's iconography deals with the concept of "duality," an instance or the occurrence of opposition of concepts. In his work, Snipes surface illustrations deal with the condition of duality in our culture: race, ethnic divisions, and difference. When asked if he creates work that is African-American centric, he responded, "Rather than creating artwork that speaks of love or victimization of African-Americans, I speak of the problems underlying the cognition of difference."
Plinth Gallery Curator Jonathan Kaplan elaborates further, "Kevin's work speaks softly, yet powerfully and eloquently about our culture. His narrative drawings are about race ethnicity, color, all those things that we have difficulty talking about. Yet when experienced as a story, as a narrative on a ceramic vessel, his work transcends those artificial barriers. He is a consummate ceramic artist and a skilled and elegant draftsman. His vessels serve as an eloquent discourse on our contemporary culture."
Kevin Snipes : New Work opens at Plinth Gallery on Friday ("First Friday"), October 4, from 6pm-9pm and will be on view through October 25. Please join us for a reception with the artist and experience Kevin's masterful live drawing of a full-size image on a gallery wall.
