Artist Trine Bumiller learned about the Christian devotional practice called The Stations of the Cross at a residency program several years ago. She was impressed with the idea of depicting the moments of Jesus’ last day in a series of 14 abstract canvases. Many artists choose to depict these scenes with images of Jesus and the cross. Bumiller, instead, uses images of nature. She believes that even without recognizable imagery, the pieces depict the emotional depth of the historic event.
“In my piece, trees and branches take the place of figures and events. They are mostly bare, exposing their structure and existence, rooted in the ground, reaching toward the sky,” Bumiller said. This is the first time these paintings have been shown publicly. Bumiller explores the relationship between memory and experience through paintings and installations that balance on the edge of environmental issues and abstraction.
