Inside Us showcases arts-based approaches to community wellness. The organization-wide focus on the human body and new approaches to healthy lifestyles caps a three month concentrated art and research cycle at DAVA. Young artists take on the intersections of nutrition and anatomy, along with mind and body health. Guest artists Marie Conigliaro and Eileen Roscina Richardson will exhibit related work alongside DAVA youth artists.

Middle and high school students in DAVA’s Job Training Program identified and researched areas that could directly impact their physical and emotional health. One class is connecting brain functions and dance, working with ballerina Debora Abera. Other groups look at mind/body connections through posters, paintings, and digital imagery.

Younger students in the DAVA Open Studio present their study of anatomy and nutrition in a multi-layered installation. Students were introduced to human systems and the foods that nourish each system. Older students shared a need for drinking water, exercising, and eating organic foods. Printmaking processes coincide with Mo’ Print, a city-wide exhibition of print media.

A selection of related ceramic sculptures by New Legacy Charter High School students, led by DAVA teacher Cal Duran, adds to the exhibit. Legacy students are investigating functions of the human body in tandem with DAVA on-site programs.

Guest artists Marie Conigliaro and Eileen Roscina Richardson complete the exhibit. Marie’s precise collages, made of vintage anatomy illustrations, allow us to discover internal bones and organs in a poetic way. DAVA teacher Eileen Richardson will present a wall installation of printmaking on fabric about the importance of eating a colorful diet for proper nutrition.

This exhibition is made possible through generous support from the Colorado Health Foundation.
