Regan Rosburg: "Curio"Art + Soul GalleryAugust 7 - 30, 2009

(from the press release) The Curio cabinet was created to showcase a collector's uncommon, important objects. Most had a mirror that lined the back of the cabinet so that objects could be viewed from all sides without disturbing the object or opening the cabinet. Objects were given sacredness, rareness and celebrity simply by just being placed in this glass cage. Denver artist, Regan Rosburg and Vermont ceramicist, Laura Zindel both share the passion and obsession of documenting interesting plants, animals and insects. In their first collaborative show, the artists were given the opportunity to exchange stories of their own "curio cabinets": their personal studios, attics, closets and boxes full of odd objects that inspire. Rosburg comments, "Our curios are our background cacophonies of muses... things that have long since died, and yet to us, are more beautiful in their afterlife. These objects are always in our peripheral artistic vision, sitting and waiting for a second life through our artwork." Both Zindel and Rosburg reveal their intrigue in their subjects in laboriously detailed drawings. Delighted by their similarities, the artists combined drawings of birds, beetles, cicadas, ants, magnolias, and Victorian script on canvas to produce a combined body of work that is intellectually thought provoking and aesthetically beautiful. As a part of the exhibition, Rosburg will also introduce new multimedia pieces, which seamlessly incorporate, acrylic, paper, photography, and found objects with layers of images and text. For this body of work, Regan chose to focus on specimens that she found immensely fascinating in some aspect of their evolutionary process. Some of the insects she has chosen to work with include the Peruvian Whipscorpian Spider, the Monarch Butterfly, and the Brazillian Bullet Ant. Rosburg was recently honored with the "Juror's Choice" award for her piece, Catharsis, in the show, Extinction: Artists Respond, at Denver's Botanical Gardens. Catharsis was originally created for the exhibit, Manifest Hope: DC, produced by EMG (Evolutionary Media Group) and Shepard Fairey's OBEY group, which opened in Washington DC during the 2009 Inauguration of Barack Obama.
