Outside the Lines

Access Gallery

August 4 - September 1, 2017

Outside the Lines is the culmination of Access Gallery’s summer program and brings together the talent of 20 artists.

Access Gallery is often labeled an “outsider” gallery, a term that takes on new life as we develop work skills and prepare young people with disabilities for meaningful work. Our artists exist outside of the typical work force. Outside of the traditional education system. Outside of the conventional thought process. We strive to find room for non-traditional students, non-traditional artists, and non-traditional thinking inside of the arts. Even if that means drawing our lines a little wider.

One of the most important ideas Access Gallery preaches to our artists is teamwork. We create art as a team. This summer we received a truckload of baseball equipment from a youth sports league. What better way to teach teamwork than by deconstructing materials from America’s favorite pastime?! Working with materials from baseball bats to photography to helmets to stickers, the artists worked together to build pieces that represent the heart of the sport and the heart of our team.
