Arts Brookfield and Plus Gallery present the solo exhibition Shelter of Desire featuring major paintings by Xi Zhang. The exhibition, which takes place at 1801 California Street in the heart of Downtown Denver, will be the first opportunity for our patrons and the community to view Zhang’s latest developments within his Metallic Leaf Garden Series, which has been in progress since the time he left Colorado back in 2014. It’s a terrific and timely return for an artist who has been revered by collectors and critics alike in our state, and more recently across further expanses both in the U.S. and abroad.
Zhang had a profound year of growth in 2016, taking on a prestigious summer-long art residency in NYC with art-collector turned gallerist Marc Straus, who along with his wife Livia have one of the most remarkable collections of contemporary art in the world. Additionally, Zhang was nominated for the John Moores Painting Prize China, with related exhibition at the Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, as well as the Premio Combat Prize, with related exhibition in Livorno, Italy. He also received the Gold Medal Prize for Painting from Art Forward contest #5, which was promoted across NYC through the Blouin ArtInfo Guide. Upon completion of his residency with Straus, Zhang moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he commenced teaching as a tenured professor of painting at the University of Utah.
Shelter of Desire will remain on view through April 28th and is easily accessible in the lobby of the building at 1801 California, with hours of 8am-6pm Monday through Friday and 9am - 2pm on Saturdays.
