Lakewood, CO – Gail Watson’s monoprints and collages are filled with so much visual depth and texture they beg to be touched. Her exhibit, Recent Work, features letterpress and foil stamping on wood and is a conscious decision to work with imagery only – without text or words. Recent Work opens at Ink Lounge Gallery on Friday, January 9.

Watson made her first book in third grade, A Trip on a Ship, and has been creating through letterpress printing, bookbinding, artist’s books and limited editions since 1987. “It wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I returned to making books and realized that it is a perfect format for communicating ideas and imagery in a very intimate way,” say Watson. “Holding a book in your hands starts a physical, tactile connection with art that allows the images and words full access to your senses.” Recent Work runs through February 8

Ink Lounge Gallery and all of Block 7 Arts hold exhibit openings on this evening, January 9, including: Flash Gallery, Anam Cara Living Arts Studio & Gallery and Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast.

Ink Lounge Gallery, anchoring one corner of Block 7 Arts in the Belmar Arts District, exhibits unique printmaking artists and holds screen print workshops. The gallery opened in the fall of 2007 and has been a venue for local print makers, national print artists and screen printed posters from Cuba. Two graphic designers, Stuart and Nicky Alden, opened the gallery in order to share their passion for the craft of printmaking with the community and getting their hands inky. Because doing good things for the world is a passion for the couple, they donate 50% of the proceeds from each opening exhibit to a charity in India, Tong-Len Charitable Trust, and Lumberg Elementary School’s art program.

Student Works - an invitational exhibition of printworks created by students in Colorado and bookworks created by students throughout the United States

(from the press release)

This exhibition, curated by gallery director Alicia Bailey, showcases printmaking students from Colorado College in Colorado Springs (Brynn MacLeod and Natasha Blitz), Colorado Institute of Art (Elena Zadouri, Ronnie B. Johnson and Tai Bickham) and Metropolitan State College of Denver (Haylee Ebersole and Tymla Welch).

The exhibition includes examples of a wide range of imagery and technique. In addition to single process techniques such as Haylee Ebersole’s intaglio & lithograph prints, Natasha Blitz’s photopolymer prints, Brynn MacLeod’s woodcuts and Tai Bickham’s salt prints, the exhibition includes mixed-technique prints such as Tymla Welch’s mixed-process intaglio, screen-printing and locking prints, Ronnie B. Johnson’s platinum/palladium prints that are crafted by combining both ilm and digital negatives and Elena Zadouri’s cyanotype dresses.

There are very few institutions that offer degrees in bookarts degrees in the United States. This exhibition includes representative works from those that do such as the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA (Andrew Huot and Asa Yoshi) and Columbia College Chicago, IL (Areujana Sim). Most of the students in the exhibition are in programs that offer occasional book arts classes in the printmaking, graphic arts or writing programs. Hannah Penny Nichols and Agnieszka Michalska, are both in the Masters of Creative Writing Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Anita Redmond is working towards a BFA in painting at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Beth Lee is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Art in Graphic Design at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Lindsey Yankey is working towards a BFA in Illustration at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Ginger Burrell is pursuing a BFA in Photography at San Jose State University, San Jose, CA. The following students are all in different disciplines at Metropolitan State College of Denver, CO: Jacintha Clark (painting), Matt Nelson (sculpture) and Cassandra Stampadoes (metelsmithing).

Abecedarian Gallery will also host a fundraiser for Student Scholarships. The fundraiser will include contemporary works on paper priced from $2 - $1000, a silent auction of art, supplies and materials and selections from gallery inventory. The Visual Art of Mark Mothersbaugh

Andenken Gallery

January 16 - February 2, 2009

Opening reception Friday January 16 at 7:00 pm

mm.jpg

(from the press release)

Mark Mothersbaugh is best known for his co-creation and vocals for the legandary band DEVO. During his downtime on early worldwide tours with DEVO, he began illustrating on postcards to send to his friends, which he still creates, and has been creating every day for over 30 years; a very obsessive habit which still yields anywhere from 1 to 25 new images per day. These cards were originally created as his personal diaries, and were never intended for public viewing. That all changed when Mark decided to share his postcard works in his critically acclaimed solo shows during the 80's & 90's, and then with his gallery tour in 2003 titled HOMEFRONT INVASION!. This marked the beginning of many solo shows to come.

Andenken Gallery is pleased to announce an evening with Mark's Postcard Diaries on January 16, 2009. The show will feature high-resolution, limited edition prints of his postcard illustrations. Opening reception begins at 7:00 PM and will feature a live performance and DJing by Magic Cyclops. Show will run through February 2, 2009. Andenken Gallery is located at 2990 Larimer St, Denver, CO 80205. Please call Thomas Horne at 303-941-2458 or write andenkentom@gmail if you have any questions.

Abstract art in the 20th and 21st centuries significantly impacted the art of Colorado. Nearly 90 artists who have a close connection to Colorado will be featured. Their bodies of work whether it is sculpture or paintings, continue to mold and define abstract art for future generations. Due to the grand scale of this project, the exhibition will be shown in two locations. Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art will host an exhibition focusing on the historical development of Colorado Abstraction, while the CVA is hosting an exhibition spotlighting contemporary works.

These exhibitions were derived from and accompany the release of the book, Colorado Abstract: Painting and Sculpture. A Universal Stare: Reflective Photos Taken by a Man with No Legs

VSA-Access Gallery brings Kevin Connolly’s Internationally Recognized, The Rolling Exhibition, to Denver, January 2 to February 7, 2009

Kevin Connolly’s, The Rolling Exhibition, documents the universal stare he experiences on a regular basis. Connolly was born without legs. From his “rolling” vantage point atop his skateboard, Connolly snaps photos of strangers staring, gawking or looking at him from the corner of their eyes.

The project began while traveling abroad, where he realized the commonality of our reaction is to stare at what does not fit into the day-to-day aspects of our lives. What also became clear is the universal human need to formulate why differences exist.

Connolly produced 32,000 images while working on The Rolling Exhibition. Some of the images are on permanent display in Prague. Other images by Connolly are included in the traveling show. The show will run January 20, 2009 to February 10, 2009 at the VSA Access Gallery in Denver.

“Everyone tries to create a story in their heads to explain the things that baffle them,” says Connolly. “For the same reason we want to know how a magic trick works…we want to know how someone different, strange, or disfigured came to be as they are. It’s natural. It’s curiosity. It is that one instant of unabashed curiosity, more reflex than conscious…that makes us who we are.” Connolly says his goal is to capture this instant in his photos.

In conjunction with The Rolling Exhibition, the gallery will feature works from VSA-Access Gallery student, Nikki Nolan, in its’ studio art area. Nikki Nolan will lead a digital photography workshop, on January 24, 2009 from 10am-2pm at the gallery. For more details contact the gallery at 303-777-0797.

"Chas' Stainless Steel, Mark Thompson's Airplane Parts, About 1,000 Pounds of
Stainless Steel Wire, and Gagosian's Beverly Hills Space at MOCA" by Nancy Rubins - photo by Ken Hamel/DenverArts.org

The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art holds an incredible array of modern masterpieces and juggles three separate facilities including the MoCA Grand Avenue downtown and the Little Tokyo based "Geffen Contemporary at MOCA" which played host to 2007's vibrant Takashi Murakami retrospective. Unfortunately times are tough for the institution which has churned through $20 million in endowment funds over the last few years to keep afloat, and has been forced into a variety of cost cutting moves including shuttering the Geffen Contemporary for six months and most recently a shotgun marriage with the larger, publicly funded LA County Museum of Art (Lacma).

While the arrangement seems like a win/win, the question being raised is will the MoCA be able to maintain an independent voice under the tutelage of it's much larger sibling.
Check out the lively debate on the LA Times website: LACMA proposes a merger with MOCA

UPDATE: Looks like MoCA is going for Plan B, per the NY Times: $30 Million Rescue for Los Angeles Museum

Digital Images due by January 3rd, 2009

Juried by the FLASH Gallery team: Greg Cradick, Valerie Photogoddess, Katie Taft and Celene Bridgford

Deadline for jpg entry is Saturday, January 3rd 12 midnight

(from the press release)

On any given night there are more than 10,000 homeless in the Denver Metro Area, including families, veterans, employed and unemployed.

Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help with this crisis.

The Show: Home is Where the Heart Is

We all have photographs of HOME. How do you document home?

Is home a place, a building, a dwelling, a city, or a feeling? Is it real or intangible? Is it your home or someone else's'? Will you choose to share your bizarre Holiday family rituals, those cherished, informal moments, the vacant lot where your home once stood, observations on a strangers' home life, commentary on the housing market, or a documentary of the homeless? Is home a shelter, or a door to walk through, a place to rest your head or raise your children? Is your home a specific item that represents you, an empty room, a crowded basement? Is home life difficult? Is it a refuge? Are you surrounded by a lot or a little? Is it an idea? How do you make a photograph of an idea? How can you not.

Show us a glimpse of what HOME means to you. It is, after all,the culture and history of you.

Working with Artists and The Denver Rescue Mission are partnering to create a powerful photographic exhibition of HOME as seen by artists from all over the country.

**All images juried into the exhibit will be printed by Master Printer and Award Winning Piezographer, Ron Landucci, owner of Infinite Editions at no cost to the artist.

**All work exhibited will be unframed and unmated and will be hung using T-pins and will have an overall dimension of 11 inches on the shortest side for consistency.

The exhibition is open to photographers using any type of photographic process, color, B/W, digital or film made images. There are no restrictions on the date images were created.

Entries must be in jpg format only. Images must be saved at 300 DPI with 11 inches on the shortest dimension. Each jpg should be saved with your initials, underscore and a number, ie., VP_1.jpg VP_2jg.

Sensual, Sexual, Whatever...
Local News
Wednesday, 17 December 2008
national.velvet.jpg

Plus gallery artist John McEnroe's latest public artwork "National Velvet" has created a bit of a stir, or rather been used to create a stir depending on your point of view. The work is funded by the city of Denver's "Percent for Art" program and is in a very high profile locale at the base of the bridge connecting the Platte River Valley to the Highlands neighborhood. A pair of KHOW DJs have taken to bashing the sculpture, confusing the artists description of the work's "sensual" nature as being synonymous with "sexual" (oh the innocence of the simple mind.) It would be all so humorous if not for the implicit agenda which is elimination of public funding for the arts, a sad, sad thing.

You can take in some of the controversy and get a few chuckles by checking out McEnroe's YouTube video on the work, and for further background, be sure to read Mary Voelz Chander's RMN article: Striking a blow for 'free-range' culture. - KLH

Artist's Choice: Vik Muniz, Rebus

Museum of Modern Art (NYC)

December 11, 2008 – February 23, 2009

Special Exhibitions Gallery, third floor

muniz.jpg
Artist Vik Muniz

It seems like only yesterday that the Museo de Las Americas played host to Muniz Remastered, a phenomenal exhibit of works by internationally known artist Vik Muniz, one of the real treats of 2007. Muniz will be curating a show as part of the Museum of Modern Art's "Artist's Choice" series that allows different artists to select pieces from the MoMA's permanent collection and bring the works to life. From the MoMA website:
Muniz inventively questions the function and traditions of visual representation by using unlikely materials to render the subjects in his photographs. For this exhibition, Muniz has chosen a rebus—a combination of unrelated visual and linguistic elements to create a larger deductive meaning—as the organizing principle of his presentation. The exhibition will feature approximately 80 works of sculpture, photography, painting, prints, drawings, video, and design objects selected and installed by the artist in a narrative sequence to create surprising juxtapositions and new meanings. Among the artists whose work will be on view are John Baldessari, Gordon Matta-Clark, Nan Goldin, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Eugène Atget, and Rachel Whiteread. Design objects will range from a wooden pencil to a kitchen pail to a Rubik’s Cube to finally, an Exit sign.
A must see exhibit if you're planning a winter trip to the big apple.

Starn Twins NYC Subway Project

Mike and Doug Starn - Jennifer S. Altman for The New York Times

Mike and Doug Starn were here in Denver earlier this year as part of their noteworthy exhibit "Attracted to Light" at RMCAD, and the show was typical of the type of work the Starn brothers (who are identical twins) are best known for: fragile, hand crafted photos assembled with tape along the walls of the gallery. For "Attracted to Light" the theme was moths and the Starns brought an eerie personality to the creatures by using close up, deep focus photographs that where more like portraits than biological studies.

The twins have a new public works project for the NYC subway that is a bit of a break from their past explorations of decay and impermanence, in fact their latest work is very permanent and involves fused glass created using a process the brothers developed along with 160 year old German manufacturer of architectural glass Franz Meyer. The million dollar piece incorporates a variety of elements including trees, leaves and an antique map of NYC and is located under the Staten Island Ferry terminal in lower Manhattan. So the next time you're in NYC, take the subway downtown and check it out on your way to the cheapest scenic boat cruise on the island.

Louise Bourgeois Documentary at the Starz Film Center
Event Announcements
Wednesday, 10 December 2008

If you can't make it to LA for the Louise Bourgeois Retrospective at the LA MoCA, then head over to the Starz Film Center on the Auraria Campus to check out an interesting new documentary on the artist's life: Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine. From the Denver Film Society website:

Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a cinematic journey inside the life and imagination of an icon of modern art. As a screen presence, Louise Bourgeois is magnetic, mercurial and emotionally raw. There is no separation between her life as an artist and the memories and emotions that affect her every day. Her process is on full display in this extraordinary documentary. As an artist, Louise Bourgeois has for six decades been at the forefront of successive new developments, but always on her own powerfully inventive and disquieting terms. In 1982, at the age of 71, she became the first woman to be honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In the decades since, she has created her most powerful and persuasive work that has been exhibited, studied and lectured on worldwide. Filmed with unparalleled access between 1993 and 2007, Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a comprehensive and dramatic documentary of creativity and revelation. It is an intimate, human and educational engagement with an artist’s world.
The film is showing from Friday December 12th until Thursday the 18th.

Josh Keyes - The Call I

The seventh annual Art Basel Miami Beach wrapped up last weekend and a variety of Denver gallery folk made the trek south. David Smith of Limited Addiction Gallery formally announced that Limited Addiction will now be known as the David B. Smith Gallery; the blog Arrested Motion has an interview with Smith detailing the change as well as some background on how Limited Addiction got started: Preview/Interview: David B. Smith Gallery @ Art Basel Miami 2008.

Dave was at one of the several side shows taking place alongside Art Basel (Aqua Wynwood) highlighting work by one of the most interesting artists in his stable, Josh Keyes, as well as Colorado's Jason Theilke and Minneapolis based sculptor Gregory Euclide.

Tom Horne of Andenken Gallery was also in Miami and snapped a few pics including a variety of Banksy-esque graffitti around town; check out the Andenken Gallery blog at http://beautyandthestreet.org for more info.

The Miami Herald serves up full coverage of the goings on including (among many interesting articles, videos and images):

NPR on Daniel Libeskind

Denver Art Museum's Hamilton Building by architect Daniel Libeskind - photo by BitterBredt.de

NPR correspondent Laura Sydell put together a thoughtful audio commentary on architect Daniel Libeskind, going into depth on Libeskind's work here at the Denver Art Museum as well as an analysis of his recently opened Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.

The segment offers a few pros and cons from locals on the DAM's Libeskind designed Hamilton Building, but I thought this snippet sums it up nicely:
Christopher Hawthorne, architecture critic for The Los Angeles Times, says that just because a building is a great architectural achievement doesn't mean it works well as a museum. "It's a really stunning piece of architectural sculpture," Hawthorne says, but the "aggressive forms" make it "a pretty terrible place for showing and looking at art." Hawthorne is among those who say the galleries make him dizzy.
You can listen to the piece or read a transcript of the audio at the NPR website: Balancing Form, Function In Museum Architecture - KLH
