"Everything in life inspires me, not quite with direct interpretation, but as I see and experience faces, words, gestures, colors and shapes - all of it - I am always looking and reacting to the energy around me. It can become a self centered reflection of whatever is around that interests me rather than great issues that have to be answered objectively. All of this gets channeled and flows from brain to arm, hitting white board with that first wonderful stroke of vibrant color, and continues with adding and subtracting, stripping down to the most essential. I am in love with the eloquence of sparseness and everything to do with the act of painting: the smell, the lushness of oil paint, color." - Lisa Kowalski

Haze Diedrich - Isolation in a Time of Heros - oil on canvas, 58"x58"

(from the press release:)

Interior Construct explores inner and outer manifestations of the human experience from the location, identity and purpose of the human soul to the role everyday objects, passing conversations, and common occurrences take in shaping our perception of reality. Diedrich’s literal and figurative interpretations investigate universals of time, place and being using memories of experience to work stories in reverse, highlighting essential elements from compartmentalized origins. Diedrich’s canvases are infused color fields in which vessels and organic forms surge into being and exist in symbiotic trajectories. Holdeman similarly forms inclusive dimensions within his panels, using abstracted views of interior elements, doors, entries, and windows as linear constructs, a dimensional atmosphere contained beneath the surface. Artists Haze Diedrich and Scott Holdeman present a vibrant tapestry of canvases and panels encouraging the viewer’s introspection.

Gina Smith Caswell - Ocean Portrait

Gina Smith Caswell Statement

My current show is oil paintings that explore the figure and portrait. The figure images capture the individual caught up in an activity. I'm interested in the movement of the body and in particular, the hands.

taublieb.jpg

Charlie Taublieb Statement

Painting and constructing, whether spontaneous or calculated is emotionally, spiritually and intellectually draining-and uplifting-at the same time, for me. I don’t judge the success of a finished piece of my artwork entirely by the visual results, but also from the emotional satisfaction plus the act of creating.

I have always been challenged and intrigued by the circle. Trying to make a cohesive statement within its borders is difficult and when successful, very rewarding. The success of a painting lies in the eyes of the viewer and as well as in mine. My paintings and constructions are meant to be viewed and also touched. The look and feel of some of the elements in my work hopefully will surprise you and make you smile. Some are smooth and some are not, some are loud and some quiet, but all are part of a shape that has “No Beginning…No End…”

IN THE CORE ANNEX:

Stuart C. Andrews "Routes and Branches"

In this second installment of his Four Seasons series, Stuart Codington Andrews weaves a visual road trip for the viewer, examining the roots of the 4 themes of chess, trout, pop culture, and mythology, through the space and light of the western skyline, with a few sidetrips. This is a collection of new oils and acrylics that will merge these lines of ideas with color and humor, while glancing back at the origins of each along the way.

Garvin: "Creations in Fluid Instability"

The dichotomy of truth lies in everything. The paradox of ideas is what drives me to continue down the rabbit hole searching for the convergence of truth. Original, collaborative, mixed media, extravaganza, all born from this beautiful gift of suffering we call existence, would best describe my current body of encaustic work.

Flash Gallery

November 21, 2008 - January 4, 2009

Opening Reception will be held Friday, November 21st from 6-9pm

wee.jpg

(from the press release)

FLASH Gallery is pleased to present a group show titled WEE: A Small Photography Exhibit. The exhibition will run Friday, November 21st through Sunday, January 4th, 2009. The opening reception will be held Friday, November 21st from 6-9pm. Artists Greg Cradick, Ellen Yeiser, Jasmine Champion, Katie Taft, and Owen O’Meara are among some of those to be featured in the exhibition.

The photographs in this exhibit will not be framed larger than 14” in any one direction, hence the name “Wee.” Artists in this exhibit have taken into consideration that small art has a different intent than works printed large and are imparting that to the viewer. Small work asks you to get close, to examine, to experience the work one on one. The Wee exhibit invites an intimate relationship between the viewer and the image and allows them to explore it further.

Jury Duty Waiting Room Highlights Local Artists
Local News
Wednesday, 19 November 2008

Artists Alicia Bailey and Melinda Laz from their 2008 Next Gallery exhibit "A Catalog of Lovely Things"

The City of Denver has been highlighting local artists in the jury selection waiting room at the City and County Building for a while now and I was looking forward to catching artist Rodney Wallace's installation there earlier this summer, but unfortunately his work had been taken down only a few days before my number was up and I had opportunity to serve. The use of the waiting room as an exhibition space continues and currently is playing host to artistic collaborators Melinda Laz and Alicia Bailey whose latest installation will be on display throughout November. The jury selection room is on the forth floor of the City and County Building at 14th and Bannock across from Civic Center Park. - KLH

If your travels take you westward to LA, do not miss the opportunity to take in this major retrospective spanning the career of artist Louise Bourgeios at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Grand St. location). Bourgeios, at age 96 continues to work daily, and the LA exhbit (which is part of a 3 city US tour including the Guggenheim in NYC and the Hirshhorn in DC) will include at least one of her recent works in addition to some LA based works that will not be making their way back east and will only be shown as part of the MoCA exhibit.

Of note for Denver locals, the Michele Mosko Gallery on 12th Avenue by the Denver Art Museum actually has some of Bourgeios recent prints which combine elements of sculpture with silkscreen, and her work can also be seen as part of the DAM's permanent collection. - KLH

Birger Sandzen - Iceberg Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado - 1930

(from the press release:)

Ninth annual Colorado & the West exhibition, featuring over one hundred fifty paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints by important artists of the west from the 19th through the mid 20th century

This year’s show will be highlighted by our largest selection to date of oil and watercolor paintings by Charles Partridge Adams, three great Colorado paintings by Birger Sandzén and a group of rare large works by early Colorado artist, W.H.M. Cox. These will be complemented by traditional, Impressionist, and Plein-Air landscapes by other notable western artists including Joseph Henry Sharp. The show will also be emphasizing modernist works by artists including Eve Drewelowe, Ethel Magafan, Fred Shane and Vance Kirkland.

The majority of the artists featured held associations with prominent western institutions and groups including the Broadmoor Academy, Chappell House, Taos Founders, as well as the Santa Fe Art Colony. We will again break slightly from our focus on pre 1950’s works with the inclusion of some exceptional paintings by William Sanderson.

Winter Festival 2008

Featuring Mary Cay, Kara Worthen, Meredith Nemirov and Theresa A. Anderson

East End Applied Arts

November 14 - December 20, 2008

Opening reception Friday November 14 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm

winter2008.jpg

(from the press release)

AURORA - Colorado contemporary artists exhibiting in ‘winter festival 2008' share no formal aesthetic. While some of the exhibitors use the same media, whether paint, print, ceramic, or silver, artists manipulate their media differently to create exceptional pieces. However, the artists share aspects that define the processes of their work. The participants are interested in experimentation with the form and function of each piece. They use materials as inspiration for what their work is to become. The artists have a vision for their work and believe that the viewer is responsible for interpreting the work before them.

Mary Cay,a renowned ceramicist who has participated in the prestigious bi-annual Colorado Clay exhibition, will exhibit pieces from her vessels collection. As an artist who intends to invoke a deeper meaning in her works, Cay says that "the vessel acts as a metaphor for the spirit."

Kara Worthen formed an interest in jewelry design at a young age. Her latest work, inspired by cookie-cutters, is silver jewelry for young girls, ages five to ten.

Meredith Nemirov, a native New Yorker who moved to Ridgeway, CO to pursue her artistic career, has been teaching plein air (open air) workshops for several years at the Ghost Ranch, Georgia O'Keefe's former New Mexico home. Although her paintings do not follow the traditional plein air style, her works on paper focus on the contours and movement of the Colorado landscape.

Theresa A. Anderson, an up and coming painter who recently caught the attention of London contemporary art collector Charles Saatchi, will show six new works specifically done for the gallery.

Contemporary Colorado art is emerging in the larger art world. ‘winter festival 2008' offers the public a chance to see works from both the established and up and coming artists that are part of this exciting scene. Gallery owner Kim Harrell says, "The goal of the gallery has always been to make art available to anyone. This exhibition offers affordable, functional, and decorative works that are of the highest quality and support local artists; I feel it's a wonderful way to find thoughtful gifts while sustaining your community." Like the city of Aurora known as the "gateway to the Rockies," East End Applied Arts is a "gateway" to Colorado contemporary art.

(from the press release)

This exhibition features individual current works by Alicia Bailey, Donna Price and Heidi Zednik. The three artists are members of Spondere - a collaborative collective that emphasizes the collaborative artistic relationship over expression of the individual artist. Although this exhibit features their individual works, documentation of previous collaborative works will be available for review throughout the exhibition.

Spondere was created following two collaborative installation projects by Bailey & Zednik (Notes from the Underground at Edge Gallery in Denver, CO and Conversations from the Underground at the Black Mountain Arts Center in Black Mountain, North Carolina) as a means of formalizing the collaborative process. The collective continues to develop projects whose focus is in working with with an ever broadening range of individuals and groups, providing opportunities and a foundation for individuals to experience and trust the process of creating something together. In addition to collaborative installations, Spondere is focused on exchange projects, the most recent, in tandem with the Denver based Magnet Mafia, is an ongoing international exchange project between street artists of Denver, students and artists of Austria and artists in the southeastern United States.

If you have yet to visit the revamped Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, well first off, you've missed some outstanding exhibits over the last year, but that said, with gas south of $2/gallon in various Denver environs and a new program featuring free admission on the third Saturday of each month, there's no excuse not to take in the FAC's notable permanent collection along with two interesting takes on historical visions of the West currently on display until early January 2009. "Walt Kuhn: An Imaginary History of the West" alongside "Place and Time: Reenactment Pageant Photographs" by Robischon Gallery photographer Edie Winograde contrasts the early 20th century modernist paintings of Kuhn's West along with 21st century photographs highlighting Winograde's 19th century Western subjects.

While you're down south, be sure to take in the "Mind the Gap" exhibit at the Gallery of Contemporary Art on the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs campus.

Blake Flynn - above: Madonna of the Birds; below: Big Head

(from the press release:) Blake Flynn is a high realism painter with a surrealist message. Unlike Dali, Blake’s surrealism does not come from a deliberate distortion of real objects, but rather from the way he rearranges everyday life and its surroundings so that what appears calm and ordinary slowly becomes in the viewer’s mind a complex and profoundly disturbing message.

The artwork itself is very precise and clearly defined. It is almost comforting until it is carefully scrutinized again and again to reveal a world on the constant verge of collapse that can still be saved if we become active participants in its restoration.

His message, although disturbing, remains a message of hope. It is not too late to make our world whole again. He is a living witness and reporter of our time, with a great sense of humor about what we are now with an option to change.

This is the fourth annual fall exhibit of Blake Flynn’s work at Habitat Gallery, and we are honoured to have Mr. Flynn take Habitat Gallery into its sixth year in the heart of Denver’s Artdistrict on Santa Fe. - Georgia Amar (Gallery Director)

Public Art at Palazzo Verdi

Public artwork in the lobby of the new Greenwood Village "Palazzo Verdi" office space

The down economy is sure to put a damper on all the construction cranes in the metro area, but the fruits of the last boom continue to ripen accompanied by a variety of public artwork. Down in the DTC, the 15 story "Palazzo Verdi" (I always think Italy when I'm driving I-25 through the DTC...) is a new LEED certified "Class AA" speculative office building designed by Colorado architect Curt Fentress that will feature opulent new work by a trio of artists including Roger Leitner, Todd Siler and Museum of Outdoor Art creative director Lonnie Hanzon.

Hanzon has designed a dramatic 13 foot wide, 40 foot high mixed media "Chandelier Chardin" composed of steel, elements from an antique Italian chandelier and pieces of fabricated glass. Underneath the chandelier is Roger Leitner's 42 foot diameter  "Chartres Labyrinth," a recreation of a 13th century maze at Chartres Cathedral in France composed of 4800 square feet of stone and pieced together via a laser cut process that enables a precision fit without grouting. Alongside the epic ceiling and floor works is a 55 foot high mural "Ascension" by Todd Siler.

The Palazzo Verdi is located at 6401 South Fiddler's Green Circle in Greenwood Village with the public artworks officially on display come November 11th 2008. - KLH
