William Stockman: "Nothing is Hiding"Recent Paintings and DrawingsSinger Gallery, Mizel CenterNovember 29 - January 18, 2008Opening Reception for the Artist Thursday, November 29, 5:30–8:00 PMI first made my way out to the Singer Gallery to see the excellent show featuring work by Komar and Melamid and I'm glad that I figured out how to get there (a little off the beaten path, about a mile from Cherry Creek, on the second floor of the Mizel Center) as the current show by William Stockman is well worth the trip. Stockman's sketched out nudes have a natural, spontaneous quality brought about through simple composition and lots of space on his large canvases. His characters are caught up in abstract, mundane dramas that include an explosion ("Plume"), a noose-like rope ("Rope Swing") and a boat ("Tender"). Stockman also works or highlights his subjects' faces so they stand out and create an ultimate focus that draws the viewer into the overall piece. In addition to his large works, the exhibit features two walls of smaller conte crayon drawings that offer great insight into Stockman's sketch-oriented process for creating the larger narratives. - KLH Singer Gallery Mizel Center for Arts and Culture 350 S.
