Tiny Iron/Heavy MetalDowntown Aurora Visual ArtsJune 5 - August 15, 2008Opening reception Thursday June 5th, 4:00-8:00 pmAdditional reception during the East End Arts District Summer Art Walk on Friday June 13th DAVA is about as far east as one is going to get short of going to the airport, but the current show "Tiny Iron / Heavy Metal" is certainly worth the trek. The exhibit features works in iron by a variety of artists many of whom were also here in Denver taking part in the Western Cast Iron Art Conference. Iron as a medium is sturdy and dense regardless of scale (not to mention extremely difficult to work with), but seeing it put to use in such petite, almost dainty formats creates an interesting contrast. DAVA has teamed the accomplished iron artists on display with a variety of youth artists whose pieces were formed from cast aluminum. Click here for some pictures from the exhibit. The conference will take place in Denver from June 2 to 7 with exhibits, iron pours, lectures and workshops on Auraria campus and at other locations around the Denver Metro area. Tiny Iron will include selected small cast iron sculptures, by Rian Kerrane, Viviane Le Courtois, Eric Waldemar, Diane Talbot, Craig Robb, Dave Seiler, Michael Beckemeyer, Megan Harrison and Alex Scott (Colorado); Michael Bonadio and Remy Hanemann (Alabama); Cynthia Handel, Rich Stewart, and Mary Mortimer (California), Elizabeth Kronfield (NY), and James Hayes (Ireland). Advanced DAVA students Jazmin Hernandez, Kayla Cubbison, Javier Torres, Rosa Vargas, Armando Chavez, Celeste Seese, Edward Seese, Javier Lira, Paycor Garcia, Adrian Nava and Cynthia Rodriguez worked with guest artist Rian Kerrane, Professor of Sculpture at the University of Colorado at Denver on a metal casting project. Students built and sprued original wax sculptures at DAVA. The wax pieces were then dipped in ceramic shell and cast in aluminum at the University Of Colorado at Denver with the help of UCD Sculpture Club Students. DAVA students watched their works being poured in hot metal at UCD sculpture studio. In addition to casting, Youth ages 7 to 17 in DAVA’s after school programs explored different ways of using metal in art including metal casting, recycled tin can sculptures, copper embossing, wire sculptures, and, metal scraps mobiles. The exhibits are free and open to the public from 11 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday or by appointment.
