Comparable to Plato’s allegory of the cave, living in a world mediated through images is an essential experience of our time. It is accompanied by a certain distrust in the representation of reality and in the ability to act. Even though we are in a unique situation having instantaneous, non-stop, access to information, and images from around the world, the belief in an ability to change the reality of war, atrocities, and social injustice is at an unsettling low. With the use of various media such as photography, video, installation, or assemblage artists in through a glass, darkly explore new ways to relate to the present world without being either didactic or dogmatic. It is the viewers who make sense of what they are seeing. Whereas Plato still believed in a way out of the dark into an enlightened outside the artworks in the exhibition share the common notion that there is no immediate access to reality. Today’s reality is always mediated through something, but this knowledge can not lead to resignation. Knowledge of our reality calls for even more effort, dedication, and reflection in trying to understand our world. Making images as well as looking at them has always had an ethical dimension-more than ever in a media-saturated world like ours.
