Sarah Haney and Bruce ClarkCORE New Art SpaceJune 19 - July 6, 2008Opening Reception: Friday. June 20, 6 - 9 p.m.First Friday Artwalk: July 4, 6 - 9 p.m. Click here for pictures from the opening In the Main Gallery: "Life In Plastic" a collection of photographs by Sarah Haney The photographs of Sarah Haney’s “Life In Plastic” series depict the “realities” of Barbie and Ken’s lives in a darkly humorous manner. Barbie inhales cocaine at a bar; Ken knots his tie and looks disdainfully at Barbie’s mascara-streaked face as he informs her that their relationship is over. Haney creates a sense of genuine emotion on the frozen plastic faces of her subjects, and her work has a voyeuristic quality that draws the viewer into the detailed scenes she creates. While the humor inherent in the black and white images of the girlhood icon gone bad is the most immediately striking feature of the individual photographs, when taken as a whole the series addresses issues of relationships, beauty and body image; of the perils of living in a world where appearance is everything. "Artist at Work" new oil paintings of artists at work by Bruce Clark. One of many re-occurring themes in Bruce Clark's body of work is "homages", parodies and other acknowledgment to influential artists and art styles. "Artist at Work" features new oil paintings depicting artists working and not working. The current paintings are a pictorial expression of respect to various artists and their aesthetic. One example is "Georgia's Pottery" showing Georgia O'Keeffe late in her career. "After she lost her eyesight, Georgia pursued art through feeling, touching and molding clay," states Bruce Clark. "This astonishing woman, well into her 90's, still had a strong artistic drive and chose one of the few creative avenues left to her. I admire her work and identify with the sparseness of the landscape she depicted." New paintings in the exhibit include Frida Kahlo, Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp at various stages of their artistic endeavors. Also showing are other recent paintings, drawings and sculptures selected from the artist's studio. In The CORE Annex: The Sankofa Arts Alliance presents "Family" an art show featuring new works by The Sankof Arts Alliance and other African-American artists.
