Destinesia: New Paintings by Mark Penner-Howell
Mark Penner-Howell creates paintings based on "found" images from a multitude of
sources, including Dick & Jane illustrations, scientific diagrams, and
photographs on soldiers' blogs. "For me, the creation of a painting is an
exercise in manipulating pictorial context to suggest new readings of familiar
icons," Penner-Howell states. "Usually I end
up nudging the pieces toward certain themes that I find fascinating. Broadly,
these themes have to do with human frailty and miscommunication, and are often
delivered with a heavy dose of irony." Penner-Howell is a new member of CORE and
shows regularly in the Denver area, as well as working as a freelance graphic
designer.

One Hundred Famous Views of Denver: New Paintings and Objects by Anne Thulson
Anne Thulson is a painter and installation artist whose new work in her
inaugural exhibition at CORE will feature famous and un-famous Denver sites that
address dualities of obscurity vs. fame, rationalism vs. faith, and hubris vs.
diffidence. Of her work, Thulson explains, "I am interested in the
deconstruction and re-enchantment of Denver nostalgia and how a physical city
can create pictures in our minds that taunt and reassure us. My pictures
question the ways in which we derive meaning from place, artifacts, and fame."
