Dirivitive: Symmetrical Studies: The Art of Nathan BeardSoft Pinecone Productions Studio & GalleryJune 28 - July 26, 2008Opening Reception July 4th from 6pm to 9pm
Beard's abstract oil series "dirivitive: symmetrical studies" is so named because the works are derived from ongoing works and processes they are also derivations of each other. He has changed the spelling to "dirivitive" because he likes the symmetry formed by this spelling. Beard explains: "The 'dirivitive' series is essentially about two things: symmetry and color. Color is my favorite aspect of painting and I delight in using it playfully. The colors I have used for this body of work are borrowed from everyday observances of interestingly painted Victorians in the neighborhoods of the city, my wife's garden, and from memories of our trips together to the Navajo Nation and along the Pacific Coast Highway. My intention regarding color is to imbue each painting with a specific personality: melancholic, calm, dependable, warm, joyful, passionate and frustrated. Because I have used a limited number of compositions repeatedly, each group can be read as a single individual displaying varying temperaments or as completely different individuals from the same "family". Painting symmetrically is something new to me and arises from my interest in the idea that "every left has a right" and that the interaction between lefts and rights is what drives the world forward, backward, asunder, and to lofty heights; that order isn't so much the norm, but rather is imposed upon the world. It is not a coincidence that the source image for these symmetrically ordered paintings is of a politically motivated African riot. The underlying concept in all of my work is to capture the state of transformation from chaos to order. I share the common human desire to make the world a more beautiful place and painting is one way I want to achieve that end. I hope you enjoy the show." Gallery owners Pete and Carol Radliff's work will also be on display during Beard's show.
