When I first saw the images from Nathan Abels latest exhibit at Sliding Door Gallery on the artist's website, I thought they were subtle yet powerful takes on nature photography, but then when I read further and discovered they are actually paintings, I was even more intrigued and knew I wanted to get a first hand look.

And seeing the works up close did not disappoint: the pieces are like a cinematic travelogue through a monochromatic storyline whose characters are trees, construction sites and fading horizons. While there is of course an undeniable link to the underlying photographs that Abels bases the pieces on, there is also a very painterly feeling as if one is looking at a 19th century landscape by Casper David Friedrich, one of the masters Abels takes inspiration from. - KLH

(from the press release)

"A Blur Defines It" consists of new works by artist Nathan Abels. The images Abels presents in this exhibition are more brooding and atmospheric than his previous works and describe a sense of uncertainty primarily through landscape-based imagery. The places depicted in these works show evidence of an inevitable change through foreboding heavy clouds on the horizon or a dense settling fog. “A Blur Defines It” is a visual reflection of apprehension, mystery and anticipation.

Nathan Abels is a transplant to Denver from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He has been an active member in the Denver arts scene since arriving here in 2007 - showing in numerous solo and group shows. Abels has exhibited nationwide, most recently showing in a two person show at Now Artspace in Denver and part of two Plus Gallery sponsored group shows in the fall and winter of 2007. Abels continues to establish himself in the Denver area through his evolving work.
