Mark Travis: Memorial ExhibitSpace GalleryAugust 22nd - October 11th, 2008Opening Reception: August 22nd, 6:00-9:00 pm Mark Travis brother James at the opening of his late brother's exhibit at Space Gallery - photos by Ken Hamel/DenverArts.org It's certainly a tragedy that Mark Travis passed away before being able to see his latest show now on display at Space Gallery, but Mark's brother James was on hand at the opening to spend some time talking to the artist's friends and fans. Travis' monochromatic abstract models are sometimes reminiscent of Willem De Kooning's women, but where De Kooning's subjects are somewhat terrifying in the slow motion disruption of their facial features, Travis' forms are sensual and mysterious, obliterated bodies fading into a dark distance. - KLH Click here for photos from the opening Space Gallery 765 Santa Fe Drive Denver, CO 80204 720.904.1088 Tue-Sat: Noon - 6:00 PM http://www.spacegallery.org photos by Ken Hamel/DenverArts.org (from the press release) Space Gallery is honored to present, Mark Travis: Memorial Exhibit. This show features the last remaining works of Mark Travis, a Denver painter whose life ended last December but whose art still resonates. Those who knew Mark Travis in his life describe him as a "consummate painter," an "artist’s artist," or more succinctly, "the real deal." This exhibit was planned by the artist last fall to coincide with the Democratic National Convention. It was Travis’ intention to produce, over the course of the year, a politically motivated body of works. The fruition of this challenge, although inevitably unrealized, may lead viewers of this collection to a deeper understanding of the more complex nuances in Travis’ mark making, color composition and figural abstraction. Space Gallery invites and encourages the Denver art community, friends and those unfamiliar with his work to participate in this event and pay tribute to one of our own.
