Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and ObjectsCenter for Visual ArtAugust 29 – November 1, 2008Opening Reception Thursday, September 4, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Christo - "Wrapped New York Times, June 13, 1985" - 1985 It should be no secret that Metro State's Center for Visual Art in LoDo has put on some first rate exhibits over the last few years, however I've anxiously been awaiting this show since it was announced back in September 2007: Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects will be opening Friday August 29th and will feature over 3 decades of the artists' revolutionary environmental sculptures (perhaps performances might be more accurate as the spectacle of organizing and mounting these works is just as powerful as the actual installation.) On display will be preliminary sketches and post-installation documentation from historic works including "Surrounded Islands" (islands off the Miami coast wrapped in pink plastic), the "Wrapped Opera House" in Sidney, Australia and Colorado's own "Valley Curtain." This is an exhibit not to be missed. - KLH Mary Voelz Chandler's RMN review: Metro exhibit showcases wrap stars Christo, Jeanne-Claude Center for Visual Art Metropolitan State College of Denver 1701 Wazee St Denver, CO 80202 Tue-Fri: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sat: 12:00 - 5:00 PM http://www.mscd.edu/news/cva (from the press release) The Metro State Center for Visual Art is proud to present, Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects. Making its Colorado debut, the exhibition features the most integral aspects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s versatile career. Extremely varied in both content and technique, this collection has not been exhibited in the United States in over 15 years and boasts over 130 original numbered editions of prints and objects by Christo and photographic editions by Wolfgang Volz of works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Works in the collection represent the diversity in their oeuvre and date from as early as 1962 through 2004. The works in the exhibition relate to the large projects in which Christo and Jeanne-Claude have made short- term, reversible interventions in cityscapes and landscapes. Some show completed projects, others show the artists’ conceptions of projects never realized. The act of drawing and collage is a preparatory one for Christo in anticipation of a project’s execution. Once completed the large-scale, temporary projects are recorded in photographs, documentary films and videos. Notable pieces in the exhibition include, preparatory works and documentation photographs of Surrounded Islands, Project for Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida; lithograph/collages of Arc De Triomphe, Wrapped; and Wrapped Opera House, Project for Sidney; photographs of Valley Curtain, Rifle, Colorado and Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties; and objects such as Wrapped New York Times and Wrapped Payphone. In addition to this collection, the exhibition will include several preparatory works from the Over The River project. In conjunction with the Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Prints and Objects exhibition, the Center for Visual Art will host a lecture by the artists at the Temple Hoyne Buell Theater in the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. There will also be an opening reception on Thursday, September 4, 2008. The lecture and the reception will be free and open to the public. Free lecture tickets are available online at www.MetroStateCVA.org. The Center for Visual Art is located at 1734 Wazee Street, Denver, CO 80202.
