American Print 2009Foothills Art CenterJanuary 31 – March 22, 2009Opening Night Celebration Friday January 30, 5:30 – 8:00 pm
Also on display in the adjacent "Foothills II" gallery space (located south of the Main Gallery) "thINK: Prints with Purpose" (Note, Foothills II is closed on weekends) (from the press release) A new president, a time for change, ups and downs on the political landscape, not to mention the economy. What better way to reflect on the issues of today than through the eyes of contemporary printmakers living in the United States. Foothills Art Center curator, Michael Chavez, chose 73 works by 43 artists living in 17 different states that address the economy, environment, immigration, war, presidential politics and their effects on American life. This exhibition is especially apropos given that it opens nine days after a new American president is sworn into office. As our government prepares to confront the issues facing our nation, artists are busy tackling the same challenges through their artwork. Printmakers have always been on the forefront of social commentary and this exhibition carries on that tradition. Printmaking is often referred to as a democratic art form for its relative affordability and capacity to reach wide audiences by creating multiple copies of the same image.
