The Thinking Truck: A Film by Eric WaldemarBoulder Public LibraryJuly 11, 2008: 7:00 PMVisual music, peculiar narrative, and conversation with the artistWorld Premiere, Waldemar’s First Colorado solo screening in 10 years
(from the press release:) Long-time film buffs know Eric Waldemar’s peculiar blend of narrative and visual music from shows at Denver International Film Festival, Denver Art Museum, the Bug Theatre, and Pirate Gallery. Waldemar left Denver for a decade, though, and screenings have been scarce in recent years. Waldemar is back, and this first Colorado solo screening in ten years will feature the premiere of The Thinking Truck, a 40-minute movie that emerged from a year-long, solitary trip into the Northern Chihuahuan Desert in a 1972 Winnebago. In this latest work, Waldemar confronts the legacy of his two key mentors: Stan Brakhage, Colorado’s greatest film artist, and Harry Smith. The Thinking Truck’s underlying mythic narrative is a tale of a solitary search for vision and a deliberate rebirth. From meditations on life and death that include a sequence literally shot inside a dead cow, to whimsical animated sequences, Waldemar’s vision is both wry and deeply sensitive. Fans of his previous films will immediately recognize his inimitable blend of humor, reflection, and gravity. The supple rhythm and layered complexity of his “visual music” also shows the influence of his studies in music composition at NYU. Classic Waldemar films including The Origin of Music and Know Knit Knot will also be shown, and the filmmaker will be present to discuss his work process and answer questions.
