The Denver Theatre District announced today its December Art Salon in the Sky Club at The Spire on Thurs., Dec. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. while attendees experience life at one of Denver’s highest venues, The Sky Club at The Spire, renowned Denver artist Bill Amundson, will unveil his latest work as part of the Denver Theatre District’s new Outdoor Art Gallery. Amundson’s piece was commissioned by The Denver Theatre District for the Denver Performing Arts Center and features a playful, black and white composition in the artist’s signature graphic style that is focused on the Denver Performing Arts Center. Amundson said, “I wanted to do something bold, fun and aggressive. This will be on display in public as opposed to in a gallery, so I wanted to create a behemoth, while creating something entertaining.” Amundson’s artwork will kick off the district’s Outdoor Art Gallery, which is an effort to bring exposure to the Denver arts community as well as additional excitement and vitality to downtown Denver, by placing art pieces on large scale streetscapes and LED signs throughout the Denver Theatre District. Amundson’s art work will be unveiled prior to the Art Salon and displayed on a large-scale streetscape at 14th and Arapahoe for six months. “Our vision is to fill downtown Denver with giant outdoor media as well as “arts-related” signage for cultural organizations and art galleries to promote artists, shows, upcoming events and exhibits,” said Denver Theatre District Executive Director David Ehrlich. “Part of why the Denver Theatre District was formed was to create another way to bring the arts to the community. The Art Salon at The Spire is a great example of how we work together with our partners in the district to activate arts participation downtown, engage people who appreciate art, while generating traffic to these venues.” About The Denver Theatre District Art Gallery The large-scale canvasses will be coupled with exposure on the three to five LED screens installed throughout the Denver Theatre District. These LEDs will range in size from 16-by-9 feet to 20-by-60 feet, and exposure time will likely range from short-form promotional pieces to long-form video art exhibits. The Theatre District anticipates a build out of 30 to 50 sign faces over the next few years. These signs will be primary commercial in nature, but through efforts like the outdoor gallery, the Denver Theatre District will help create an unprecedented “sign massing” combining art based and commercial pieces. The second phase of the arts presentation in 2010 will include free electronic messaging on one of five LED screens to be installed. These multi-media screens will be located as follows: • The Colorado Convention Center • The Denver Performing Arts Complex • The 16th Street Mall • Other key locations within Denver Theatre District To manage and oversee the art displayed throughout the Denver Theatre District, the district recently appointed Ivar Zeil, the owner of Plus Gallery, as its new creative director. “Ivar’s commitment and passion to bringing art alive within the community will help us to fill our Outdoor Art Gallery with extraordinary art,” said Ehrlich. He has an extensive relationships within the art community and owns one of the leading contemporary art galleries in the region.” Denver Theatre District Art Salon: The Art Salon focuses on journeys around the world of visual art and music guided by local artists and offers an opportunity to experience the hotel and art in a whole new way.
