DATELINE is pleased to announce Phil Bender: The ½ Xmas Show. This quirky solo exhibition delivers Xmas cheer six months early (or late). The Denver based Pop artists collection of offbeat grid and stacked pieces feature hundreds of (you guessed it) Santa Clauses. By transforming these vintage objects into works of art, Bender urges viewers to reconsider nostalgia and the role it plays in our memories of the holidays.

½ Xmas Eve Party: Saturday June 24th 6 -11pm
  • Artist’s Reception with holiday fun!
  • Ugly sweater contest (judged by the artist)
  • Christmas cookie baking

½ Xmas Day White Elephant in the Room Party: Sunday June 25th 6-10pm
  • Cookie decorating contest (judged by the artist)

Phil Bender collects everyday objects such as hubcaps, tennis racquets, and chinese checkers boards to name a few. Benders objects convey a sense of archeology, recovering evidence of life in the recent past. In this way his unusual brand of artwork is created, turning the discarded, obscure, or otherwise disregarded into works of rigid grids. Ultimately transforming the ordinary into simple repeating patterns which force the viewer to examine the everyday in an uncommon light.

Phil Bender was born in St. Louis in 1947 and his family moved to Dallas the next year. In the mid-seventies Phil and his first wife moved to Denver, where he graduated from the Metropolitan State College in 1979. In 1980, he and seven like-minded Colorado artists founded Pirate: A Contemporary Art Oasis, one of the first cooperative galleries in the region. Phil has exhibited internationally, including a 1996 solo exhibition in the Close Range Gallery of the Denver Art Museum and In Vienna, Austria. In the catalogue for that exhibition, Bender says he wants to pull off what he calls the artist’s ultimate scam: “I’d like to make a living doing what I love to do. I dream of having the freedom to play all the time.”
