The local press had reported that the installation of Luis Jimenez public sculpture "Mustang" was imminent, and on my last trip to DIA this Tuesday, I experienced the work first-hand on the access road to the main terminal. The piece is notable for 2 reasons: it's installation is 13 years behind schedule (it was to be part of the opening of DIA in 1995 and was mired in lawsuits at one point), and it was responsible for the death of the artist in his studio back in 2006, when a portion of the massive work fell on Jimenez severing an artery in his leg.
The work is somewhat ominous, a towering presence on the last leg of the trip to DIA as you wind into the main terminal, and is reminiscent of some kind of space alien cyberhorse, with it's glowing red eyes and metallic blue skin. For all you fellow arts travelers, Mr. Jimenez work will certainly be an ongoing presence in your life, so the sooner you make peace with it, the better. - KLH
