Summertime in Denver—which I have been told is traditionally the low season for visual arts in Denver—has seen a parade of excellent shows highlighting not only artwork (Landscapes of Colorado, Fang Lijun and Homare Ikeda to name a few) but design as well (Eames 100 and CO-Design). Dana Cain's "Denver Modernism" show this past weekend at the Denver Studio Complex brought together the best of both worlds featuring furniture and artifacts from a variety of Denver (and a few national) stalwarts, including P-Design Gallery and Mod Livin' but also brought out some of Denver's best galleries including Plus, Space and Sandy Carson. In addition, the show featured a fully stocked gallery show courtesy of dozens of local artists, hand picked by Gwen Chanzit, curator with the Denver Art Museum and coordinated/hung by artist collective "BOOM." I was really taken by Lee Ballentine's booth (Gallup House Fine Art) which featured several Late Modernism works by Colorado artists including Edward Maracak, Eve Drewelowe and Paul Kauvar Smith. I also had the opportunity to meet Colorado artist Mel Strawn at the Sandra Phillips Gallery booth whose work I had recently seen as part of the noteworthy Denver Public Library Art collection hosted on the 7th floor of the Library's main branch. In addition to the variety of visual arts and furniture on display, the show also offered up several lectures: "Collecting Colorado's Modern Art" featured local art critic Michael Paglia, Vance Kirkland Museum head Hugh Grant, Rocky Mountain News critic Mary Voelz Chandler and Ivar Zeile of Plus Gallery discussing the ins and outs of collecting Colorado's future masters, and Americana connoisseur Charles Phoenix offered up an old school retro slide show featuring various mid-century roadside attractions and fashion. - KLH CLICK HERE for pictures from the weekend...
