Set Up Date: Tuesday, October 23, 6-9pm
Event Opening: Friday, November 2, 5-10pm
Pirate Contemporary Art is a non-profit artist run gallery. Every year, for over 30 years, Pirate has hosted a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibition and event, free and open to the public. This year Pirate is partnering with 40 West Arts to expand the event and exhibitions across the entire arts district in Lakewood. This year’s exhibition for Pirate will take place from October 26 through November 11. The main event or opening is on Friday, November 2 from 5-10pm.
Día de los Muertos is a festive time to honor deceased relatives, satirize the living, and entice the spirits to visit with decorated altars and offerings. It is a festive occasion, a time to celebrate, much like a family reunion. Making an altar (or ofrenda as sometimes called in Spanish) for the occasion can be a way for you to honor the life of someone who was important to you or remember your ancestors. There are no rules about how an altar should be made or look. It can be as simple or elaborate as your creativity, time and materials allow.
Take down of altars is scheduled for Sunday, November 11, 5-8pm. Pirate has no storage so if you cannot pick up your altar please designate a person that can.
